Who we are

The 2,300 members of New York Veterinary Medical Society are licensed veterinarians in New York State. We are a non-profit member association which supports and represents those members through a range of programs, including advocating to the state government and providing continuing education.

The society is governed by an Executive Board which includes officers elected by the membership and a representative from each of the 12 regional veterinary medical associations that cover the state.

Our headquarters are in Albany, New York, where a small staff team provides administrative support to the members, Executive Board, Committees and our Regional associations.

The State society is affiliated with twelve regional Veterinary Medical Associations that provide continuing education programs and social events close to their member's work or home. Many also run programs that educate the public or support animal welfare programs.

What we do

Our programs include the following:

  • New York State Veterinary Conference held annually in partnership with Cornell University of Veterinary Medicine
  • Continuing education programs for veterinarians delivered by our affiliated regional associations
  • Advocate on behalf of the profession to the New York State legislature
  • Provide detailed knowledge on how to practice veterinary medicine within the laws and regulations of New York State through our online knowledge center
  • Encourage and recognize the contributions of our members to the profession through our awards program
  • Resolve complaints from the public about their veterinarians
  • Publish a print magazine, Connections, six times a year, and a weekly e-newsletter
  • Provide career resources including a job board and classified advertisements for practice sales
  • Deliver savings on products and services through our affinity partners
  • Nurture a new generation of veterinary leaders through our Committee for Leadership Advancement and the Power of 10 program
    • Help the public find our members
