Torres receives Calvin W. Schwabe Award for Lifetime Achievement in Veterinary Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine

Earlier this month, Dr. Alfonso Torres received the Calvin W. Schwabe Award for Lifetime Achievement in Veterinary Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at The Schwabe Symposium hosted by The Association for Veterinary Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine (AVEPM). He is the third Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine faculty member honored with this award.

Global veterinary profession teams up against antimicrobial resistance

Antimicrobial resistance doesn’t recognize borders, and efforts to combat it need to cross borders as well.Because of that, the AVMA has joined with veterinary organizations in Europe and Canada to issue a joint statement that aims to ensure veterinary oversight of antimicrobial use, mitigation of antimicrobial resistance, and the continuing availability of medications that are critical for both animal and human health.

Asian longhorned tick spreading in U.S.

The Asian longhorned tick has spread across nine states since it first appeared in the U.S. last year, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). New Jersey was the first state to report the tick, found on a sheep in August 2017, the study team writes in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

FDA working with stakeholders to maintain effectiveness of livestock and horse dewormers

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that it has requested that animal drug companies voluntarily revise the labels of drugs intended to treat certain internal parasites in livestock and horses to add information about antiparasitic resistance. This move comes as a result of the agency’s work with veterinary parasitology experts and the animal health community to find ways to maintain the effectiveness of these drugs.

FDA approves Pexion for canine noise aversion

The FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine announced today that it has approved the Boehringer Ingelheim product Pexion (imepitoin tablets) as an effective treatment for noise aversion in dogs. Pexion will be available by prescription only and is administered to the dog twice daily starting 2 days before an expected noise event and continued through the day of the event. The medication is available in 100- or 400-mg scored tablets and dosed according to weight.

Fresh frozen meats for pets recalled due to Listeria monocytogenes

Columbia River Natural Pet Foods is recalling Cow Pie fresh frozen meats for dogs and cats because of potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The bacteria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in humans. The recall was initiated after routine testing by the Washington State Department of Agriculture revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in a package of the pet food, and is being carried out with the knowledge of the Food and Drug Administration.
