Resolution calling on New York State to expand vaccine eligibility to include veterinarians, licensed veterinary technicians and other animal hospital staff

Resolved that the Executive Board of the New York State Veterinary Medical Society on February 24, 2021 requests the Governor of New York State to:

Expand COVID-19 vaccine eligibility to veterinarians, licensed veterinary technicians, and other animal hospital staff.

    Statement about the Resolution
The Executive Board of the New York State Veterinary Medical Society hereby resolves to call for the expansion of eligibility for the COVID-19 vaccination to veterinarians, licensed veterinary technicians, and other animal hospital staff. Veterinarians work in close proximity to their colleagues every day in circumstances under which it is impossible to socially distance. Added stress is placed on the profession who, throughout the duration of the pandemic, has pivoted to performing check-in procedures as remotely as possible (utilizing curbside check-in and phone communications) when their patient's owners refuse to wear masks or socially distance themselves from hospital personnel. Veterinarians also play a crucial role in end-of-life care and know how important it is for pet owners to say goodbye; euthanasia practices while remaining distanced have been nearly impossible to achieve safely.

    Thank you!
Ironically, with the expansion of covid vaccine eligibility to include comorbidities, my two veterinary colleagues and I now qualify because all three of us have asthma, BUT there are no vaccines available!
    The seemingly neverending saga continues.

As of 8 am tomorrow, Tuesday March 23, all New Yorkers over age 50 become eligible for the vaccine. It's very disappointing to see the state's decision to ignore the CDC's placing of veterinarians in the 1b category/essential workers back in January 2021.

My understanding is that it is also open to "public facing essential workers"  I believe we count for that and should be able to get vaccinated under that designation.

    Hi Kelly,
I am not sure that all "public-facing essential workers" are eligible yet. There are over one-hundred essential worker categories, and only a few of these have been specifically made eligible.

We know that the Governor's office does not consider veterinarians under the age of 50 to be eligible, however the implementation of the policy at the call-centers has been variable and sometimes inconsistent. So you may well find that some veterinarians under 50 have been vaccinated because the person they spoke to at the call-center believed that veterinarians were eligible. Some just assume they are eligible, since so many people are amazed when they discover that veterinarians are not considered eligible, and will schedule appointments without fully checking. So that explains why many veterinarians are hearing that they are eligible from others who were vaccinated.

    Tim,

I don't think they will EVER say "veterinarians are eligible". They NEVER think of us for anything.  I think you are going to have to get in under another label.  I got my vaccine as a comorbidity ( although I could now qualify through age since I am  now 50).  My staff have signed up under public facing essential employees.  We will see how it goes- most have appointments this week.  They technically also are "Essential in-person building service workers" since they do the cleaning as well. I will let you know if there are major problems.

I think the "they" in this case is a "He" - this is entirely Governor Cuomo's decision

This is an experience of a single individual exerting emergency powers during a crisis. Usually those situations leave everyone with something to be upset about. I very much doubt that veterinarians have much more to complain about the emergency government than most other groups. As you know, our real government, the legislature, is up in arms about this and pulling back emergency powers, and even calling for the Governor's resignation.

My point is to be conscious of who "they" is. We have some great legislators and leaders within the State Departments of Education and Ag and Markets, who are very concerned and supportive of the veterinary profession.
